If you love beautiful homes, like I do, then watching a movie that takes place in an amazing home is a bonus. Here’s my list of movies to watch!
Something’s Gotta Give
East Hampton. Jack Nicholson. Diane Keaton. It’s a match made in heaven. I don’t know which of the three is the star of the show, but does it matter? Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton have a great on-screen chemistry and with a back drop of a breezy beach house that only a set master could dream of. Yup.. that’s right, it’s a staged set. Boo… but that’s ok. We’ll just pretend that it’s a real home and we are drinking lemonade on a perfect rattan recliner on the porch. It’s a predictable plot and ending, but who cares? This is a movie that you’ll watch over and over.
If Something’s Gotta Give had a beautiful older sister with an extra dose of oomph in the movie version, it’d be It’s Complicated. Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin are a hilarious combination on screen and on top of her amazing Santa Barbara style retreat, she has an eat-in boulengerie that would make any budding entrepreneur suddenly want to become a restauranteur. Her home, complete with garden and all feels like a home we all wanted to grow up in. The fact that Jane has home made lavender ice cream at the ready in the freezer gives us the warm and fuzzies and is the movie I go to when I just want to escape my day.
In between ogling over the set you’ll be laughing out loud. It’s hilariously good.
When a Stranger Calls
Ok – so you’re not into romantic comedies, that’s ok – I won’t hold it against you. The horrorista in me has a movie just for you. Even though it doesn’t make the top of the horror list on its own, it certainly will keep you on the edge of your over sized leather sofa in your smart operated soft contemporary home on a pristine lake in some quiet corner of the Colorado mountains. This home is sexy and a distraction from the sub-par horror plot / remake. If you’re one that loves beautiful homes, you’ll have to watch this movie – even if you’re the faint of heart and the idea of a thriller sends you running for the silent hills just to be the first to be killed off, you’ll be fine watching this – I promise. There’s a couple of suspenseful moments, but nothing that even the biggest scaredy cat can’t handle.
Trust me, it’s worth it just to see the interior atrium and koi pond.
Under the Tuscan Sun
Have you ever dreamed of being dragged to Tuscany and walking the street only to stumble onto an ad for a random villa for sale and purchasing it on a whim? No? You will after watching this movie. What would my list be without old world charm thousands of miles away? This movies wraps and weaves inside this Tuscan villa as Frances (played by one of my favorites – Diane Lane) puts herself – and her new old in-dire-need-of-serious-repair home through a fixer upper we can all relate to.
Bonus points for this beautiful villa hundreds of years old is the backdrop of breathtaking Tuscany. A girl can dream…
We’re double dipping here with not one, but two homes to lust after. You can pick from a sharp executive estate in sunny Los Angeles or a charming cottage in the winter wonderland outside of London. As we follow two story lines with a trunk full of mega celebrities you’ll be whisked away in a fairy tale for any real estate lover.
Even as Cameron Diaz is throwing her cheating ex’s clothes over the balcony you won’t be thinking about how cliche the scene is, you’ll be thinking of how perfectly landscaped the home is instead.
Good one Hollywood – good one.
There are plenty of movies that have beautiful back drops, but these are my favorites. But did I miss one that makes the top of your list? Let me know!
